Origin & Vision

Graamam is an initiative of ProtoVillage, the prototype of a resilient village. ProtoVillage is a space where systemic solutions for rural resilience are collaboratively developed and validated through lived experience.

Sustainability is not a slogan. It is the way we live.

How do we build a rural economic system where economic wellbeing causes and is caused by healthy ecosystems and cohesive communities?

Graamam (Graameena Arthika Mandali) evolved as our first complete answer, through 11 iterations over 9 years of development, testing and refinement.

Graamam in short

A framework, designed to be led by rural women, that makes it profitable to practise the indigenous wisdom of their bio-region.

Graamam in full

A regenerative bio-regional economic framework that empowers rural women's self-help groups with the principles, the architecture and the incentive structure to build enterprises from their own terrain's renewable wealth and wisdom, in such a way that economic wellbeing arrives as a result of healthy ecosystems and strong communities, rather than at their cost.

Its first deployment is in ProtoVillage, about 100 km north of Bangalore, to be eventually scaled out across the country.

The Product Architecture

Every bio-region is uniquely endowed to provide the necessary and sufficient raw materials to produce products across the same four categories. Each bio-region makes them with its own unique recipes and raw materials.

The Zygote Inspiration

Our logo is inspired by a zygote - the single cell with the intelligence to transform into a whole being. Just like a zygote, the Graamam blueprint adapts to its environment. It is an "operating system" that can be replicated across regions while remaining deeply contextual to each place's resources.

Rooted in ProtoVillage

ProtoVillage is a prototype of a resilient rural community

A community in which the inhabitants practice harmonious interdependence, employ ecologically sustainable means to achieve self-reliance over 9 basic needs:

Food & Water security, Shelter, Clothing, Healthcare, Energy, Connectivity, Disaster management, Education and Economy. ProtoVillage is a living laboratory where, systemic solutions for rural resilience are collaboratively developed and iteratively refined and validated through lived experience.

Graamam is not just a brand. It is an operating system - one that can be replicated across bio-regions while remaining deeply contextual to each place.
